Purify! Removing the Tube Temptation

YouTube is filled with great, mediocre, and downright deplorable videos covering genres from instructional to entertainment to everything in between. When it comes to educating our children, how can we take advantage of YouTube’s vast resources without feeling like the resource is taking advantage of our children?

Hopkinton Public Schools employs a multifaceted strategy in step with YouTube’s Terms of Service. Its aim is to keep students at all grade levels safely in the know when using their school-based Google accounts. First, the District applies a filter to limit inappropriate web content in general. YouTube is also set to restricted mode for all students in the District. Lastly, for those students in grades K-7, the service is blocked altogether.

Fortunately, there are tools to enable parents and teachers to share appropriate videos from the YouTube collection with children of all ages. Purify from ViewPure.com allows the user to pluck a video off of YouTube and remove ads, comments, and suggested videos with the click of a mouse. The purified video is given a unique address outside of the YouTube domain, which can then be shared safely. Got a great instructional video or an age appropriate viral video? Simply “Purify” and share!

  1. Go to www.viewpure.com.
  2. Drag Purify button to bookmarks bar.
  3. Go to your YouTube Video.
  4. Click Purify button.
