Look Who’s on the Hopkins Leaderboard!

Walking around the halls of Hopkins in the early days of the school year, it’s easy to find inspiration. Buzz, tap, tap, tap — community building abounds in this classroom construction zone. After a spin around the first floor, I found my subject — the Team Sequoia Leaderboard. While a typical leaderboard is a bastion for boasting and competitive spirit, this one is littered with visions of potential fourth grade leaders. It rendered me both hopeful and motivated to help carry these young people to the finish line. Just how was all this Wow! created?

After setting the stage with discussions of leadership, teachers asked students to consider a leader as someone who does the right thing when no one is looking. They were then asked to look into the future at how they might lead. Deanna Law, a fourth grade teacher on the team, said that this activity is just the beginning. She, along with team teachers Mrs. Fox, Ms. Esdale, and Ms. Liscinsky, will continue to embed references to leadership into the curriculum throughout the year. In fact, the leadership trait fits comfortably into the CARES philosophy adopted at the school as part the Responsive Classroom approach. Who can go wrong with emphasizing cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, and self-control? Ultimately, students will be challenged to select and interpret a famous quote, illuminating how they will use it to make them a better leader.

While these few photos made this post in the spirit HPS Digital blog, I promise you that each and every photo and sentiment was as remarkable and diverse as our individual students. As I compiled my thoughts, I couldn’t help but think about how technology facilitates the communication, creativity, and collaboration that will propel these aspiring leaders well into the 21st century. This year, Hopkins welcomes the new 2:1 Chromebook environment, technological fuel for our students’ learning endeavors. Hip, hip, hooray for Team Sequoia! You are all winners atop – or along – the leaderboard!
